Majestic trees, symbol of Chile, are threatened.
A national symbol of Chile, the alerce, Fitzroya cuppresoides, is threatened
by logging. Cutting of live trees is prohibited, but illicit loggers
have found a way around the ban: make sure plenty of dead trees are
available by killing them. From the UBC Botanical Garden Weblog.
