Farmer obstructs state removal of ash trees
A farmer in St. Clair County, Michigan, has blocked Michigan
authorities from coming on to his land to cut down live ash trees. The
trees are near dead trees infested by emerald ash borer. Michigan
forestry officials hope that by killing all the ash trees within 200
yards of infested trees, they can halt the spread of the borer. The EAB
is lethal to ash trees and is spreading rapidly through Michigan's huge
and valuable ash stands.
Local property owners have not bought in to the eradication effort: "I don't think they should cut any (trees) down," said Barbara Martinelli, 66, of Harsens Island. "I think people have to take a stand." Unfortunately, that "stand" will accelerate the spread of emerald ash borers.
