Pruning

Specific types of pruning may be necessary to maintain a tree in a healthy, safe, and attractive condition. We use International Society of Arboriculture terminology to communicate the type of pruning that we perform.

Cleaning is the removal of dead, dying, diseased, crowded, weakly attached, and low-vigor branches from the crown of a tree.

Thinning is the selective removal of branches to increase light penetration and air movement through the crown. Thinning opens the foliage of a tree, reduces weight on heavy limbs, and helps retain the tree's natural shape.

Raising removes the lower branches from a tree in order to provide clearance for buildings, vehicles, pedestrians, and vistas.

Reduction reduces the size of a tree, often for clearance for utility lines. Reducing the height or spread of a tree is best accomplished by pruning back the leaders and branch terminals to lateral branches that are large enough to assume the terminal roles (at least one-third the diameter of the cut stem). Compared to topping, reduction helps maintain the form and structural integrity of the tree.

Restoration improves the structure, form and appearance of trees which have been severely headed, topped, vandalized or damaged by storms.

Fruit Trees require a specialized style of pruning that encompasses some of each of the above pruning types. Stacy Borden has training and experience pruning fruit trees in Washington State.

Shrubs do not always look their best when clipped into geometric shapes. We have the knowledge and experience to make your landscape shrubs realize their full aesthetic potential.

Cabling & Bracing

Some trees require additional support to keep them from tearing apart. The installation of a cable or brace should only be done when accompanied by pruning to reduce the weight of the limbs or trunks being cabled. Not every tree is a candidate for cabling and each tree will need to be evaluated to determine if cabling would be beneficial.

Lightning Protection

If your tree is close to a building, exceptional to the landscape, or historically important a lightning protection system should be considered. There is no reason to lose a tree due to lightning.

Tree Planting

To ensure there are mature trees in the future, new trees need to be planted today. In nature, trees have adapted to certain conditions. We select the tree that will thrive in your site. We also look for well shaped trees that have been grown in local soils and healthy root systems. We have established our own nursery to assure we can find native species to meet these qualifications. Equally important to the survival of trees is proper planting. Research has shown that 90% of the trees planted in the last 10 years have been planted too deeply. This common practice dramatically reduces the life span of the tree by fostering many root, trunk and disease problems. Our trained staff of certified arborists plants each tree correctly, giving it its best chance of a long and beneficial life.

Root Zone Soil Improvement

Soil compaction is one of the most prevalent issues affecting the well being of urban trees. By increasing the porosity of the soil the roots are able to thrive instead of struggle. Utilizing the SuperSonic Air Knife, we can amend and improve the root zone for any tree in any soil.

Fertilziation

Standard chemical fertilization of a tree's root system is not enough. That is why we use an organic fertilizer that builds the overall health of the soil in the root zone. Regular organic fertilization increases drought tolerance. All landscape plants will benefit from timely fertilization

Girdling Diagnostics and Removal

Girdling roots are a common occurrence on trees today primarily because of improper planting. These are roots that grow to encircle the base of the tree and will eventually restrict the vascular system, weakening or killing the tree. Using the SuperSonic Air Knife we can expose these roots and remove them. This process reduces stress on the tree and allows the tree to thrive again. The earlier in the life of the tree this problem is corrected, the better.

Pest and Disease Control

When the health of your tree is threatened by an insect, bacterial, or fungal pathogen we can treat the pest or disease to minimize the impact to the tree. Since pathogens are often a secondary problem we will make recommendations to improve the health of the plant as well. Not all insects are harmful to trees and we can help you distinguish which ones should be controlled.
